Toby Keith, renowned as one of the most iconic figures in country music, passed away on February 5, 2024. The announcement came via the singer’s official Instagram account.
As per the post, the country music luminary passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones. “He faced his battle with dignity and bravery,” the message continued. Keith, aged 62, disclosed his cancer diagnosis in 2022.
In his post, Toby revealed that he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer the previous autumn. However, he had already been undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments for six months. During this period, the singer remained optimistic about his prognosis and cherished moments spent with family
Despite his health challenges, Toby remained devoted to his passion for music, evident in his hosting of the annual Toby Keith & Friends Golf Classic event in June 2023. This event, spanning two days, aimed to raise funds for the Toby Keith Foundation’s OK Kids Korral, a facility supporting children with cancer in Oklahoma City.
During the event, Toby expressed hope for positive news regarding his health, mentioning an upcoming scan to assess his progress. He remained upbeat about his musical career and eagerly anticipated returning to performing. Throughout his illness, he retained his trademark sense of humor, as evidenced by his lighthearted remarks upon receiving the Country Icon Award at the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Toby celebrated significant milestones within his family. He is survived by his three children, including his wife Tricia Lucus’s eldest daughter, Shelley Covel Rowland, whom Toby adopted. Krystal Keith, Toby’s second daughter, followed in his musical footsteps and joined him on stage at the 2004 CMA Awards for a memorable performance of “Mockingbird,” one of Toby’s chart-topping hits.
Krystal ultimately paused her musical pursuits to prioritize raising her two children, whom she and her husband, Andrew Sandubrae, parent together. Nevertheless, Toby expressed immense pride in his daughter and commended her exceptional vocal talents.
Although Krystal drew inspiration from her father, she remained steadfast in cultivating her own unique musical style. Influenced by formidable female artists like Patsy Cline, Martina McBride, and Reba McEntire, she sought to carve her own path in the industry.
Toby and Tricia’s sole son, Stelen Keith Covel, reportedly delves into real estate investment and co-owns establishments like 405 Burger Bar, Hollywood Corners, and Tequila Chulos.
Stelen Covel has been happily married to Haley Covel since November 2021. Their wedding held special significance, as Haley had the honor of being escorted down the aisle by her father-in-law. Toby, upon learning of his cancer diagnosis, harbored doubts about witnessing his son’s nuptials, having witnessed others succumb to the disease. Despite his apprehensions, he fulfilled Haley’s heartfelt request, a cherished moment for the renowned “Red Solo Cup” singer.
In her tribute to Toby, Haley fondly reflected on her wedding day and expressed gratitude for his warm embrace into the family fold. She penned a heartfelt acknowledgment: “He welcomed me with open arms, and I will forever treasure that.” Haley concluded her touching tribute with a poignant sentiment: “He walked me down the aisle in 2021 to marry his son. ”
Stelen also honored his father with a nostalgic childhood photo, recalling Toby Keith as the epitome of strength. He expressed profound gratitude for Toby’s guidance, mentorship, and heroism. “All I ever wanted was to make you proud. I promise to continue doing so,” pledged the devoted son.
